History

Prior to 1775, this area of Western North Carolina was inhabited sparsely by European settlers. The vast foothills and mountains called the Appalachian Mountain Range was home to Catawba and Cherokee Native American tribes. These early inhabitants built villages, raised crops, hunted the forests and fished the bountiful rivers and streams. Archaeological evidence of human habitation extends back as much as 9,000 years ago.
